140 miles west of Detroit and 50 miles south of Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo is a city in southern Michigan. The Evergreen Packaging Kalamazoo Carton Converting Facility is located in Kalamazoo, Michigan, with easy access to the beautif Great Lakes region and the cities of Chicago and Detroit. Opened in 1952 and employing 175 team members, the facility prints and die cuts refrigerated gable top cartons for a variety of national and regional brands, primarily supplying important dairy nutrition to schoolchildren throughout the US.

Responsibilities: Purpose of the Job
The Maintenance and Engineering Manager is responsible for leading the maintenance team up to 10 hourly
personnel and managing the associated resources to achieve required results in areas of safety, preventive
maintenance, uptime and utilization of equipment, waste reduction, equipment condition improvement,
facility infrastructure upkeep, and predictive maintenance. The Maintenance Manager is also responsible
for spare part inventories, maintenance shop repairs and fabrications, preventive maintenance scheduling,
cost control and spending management for both capital and expense-based projects.
Essential Functions/Responsibilities
1. Manage Maintenance Team to ensure Facility Goals and Objectives Are Achieved:
Set the example every day by personally upholding the vision and values of Pactiv-Evergreen. Be
determined to succeed, and set the conditions for success of the Maintenance team. Instill a clear sense
of purpose linked to the business needs, and make sure there is a sense of urgency that is understood
and practiced in each and every action. Communicate facility goals and objectives to all maintenance
team members. Issue clear instructions and guidance, along with detailed performance expectations.
Lay out a vision for maintenance excellence, develop strategies and plans to achieve the expected
results and ensure positive accountability for both individual and team performances. Provide resources
and support to the team, hold regular documented crew meeting, communicate maintenance project
updates, attend all facility lead team meetings and daily production meetings to communicate goals and
provide updates on all plant priorities. Monitor and control spending and repair costs to ensure operating
plans are within budget and pegged to sales volumes. Publish and post progress of all key metrics and
take appropriate and timely performance measures for all team members.
2. Effectively Manage Preventative and Predictive Maintenance Programs:
Lead by example and instill a sense of ownership in the entire Maintenance organization, where every
member of the team takes every minute of mechanical downtime personally. Schedule and plan
preventative maintenance to include inspection and repair of equipment on an hours-based cycle. Hold
pre-planning meetings to include maintenance team and production team for planning and priority
setting of preventative maintenance tasks. Personally participate in, supervise and validate PM actions
and tasks for efficiency, quality of work and successful completion. Schedule predictive maintenance
such as vibration analysis and infrared scanning to detect potential equipment failures. Schedule
advance repairs to avoid costly equipment repairs and unexpected downtime.
3. Continuously Improve All Maintenance Team Members:
Ensure all maintenance team members are trained in safety, environmental, and all required local
proficiencies on an annual basis. Provide annual refresher training in all maintenance specific areas to
include welding safety, radiation safety, confined space entry, hot work, electrical safety, hoist and
sling usage, and chemical-specific training. Provide internal and external technical training for all
Maintenance technicians to ensure continuous improvement on both general and facility-specific maintenance
skill levels. Measure results through regular evaluations of maintenance skills, peer
feedback, and customer service feedback from the plant departments served by the maintenance team.
Administer counseling, coaching and discipline in a timely manner. Recognize and reward positive
performance wherever possible.
4. Manage Equipment Improvement and Capital Projects:
Ensure equipment improvements are planned and updated with the Production Manager and Team
Leaders from all areas of the plant to set priorities and plan equipment improvements. Provide regular
updates on the five-year capital plan to the Lead Team to set priorities for capital projects and provide
resources for getting information gathered and capital projects submitted for the current and upcoming
budget year.
5. Manage Maintenance Inventory and Spare Parts Inventory:
Communicate plant priorities and upcoming equipment rebuilds and projects to ensure the plant has
proper stock levels on necessary spare parts. Work with Plant Manager and Maintenance group to set
proper inventory levels and to ensure availability of critical spare parts. Reduce and eliminate excess
stock levels and obsolete parts wherever possible and meet corporate reduction targets. Actively drive
down the costs of holding unnecessary stock.
6. Manage Facility Maintenance and the Maintenance of all Support Equipment:
Collect competitive bids on all contracts and perform cost analysis to ensure the facility gets quality
workmanship at a competitive price. Train all contractors on facility safety rules and plant access
procedures. Schedule and manage maintenance of all support equipment including all Saturday and
Sunday maintenance work as needed.
7. Perform all other Duties as assigned
Qualifications: Education, Skills, and/or Experience Required:
1. Demonstrated knowledge and application of complex machinery and mechanical/electrical systems
2. 10 total years of experience in leadership roles within a manufacturing/maintenance environment
3. Direct first-line leadership responsibility for hourly teams
4. Management of other lead managers experience and skills is a plus
5. Organizational design, LEAN systems, and Business planning skills
6. Excellent Communication, interpersonal, and problem solving skills
7. Demonstrated proficiency in company IT/Computer systems
8. Ability to work hands-on on the shop floor and teach techniques to hourly personnel
9. Ability to be at the plant on a variety of shifts and days as needed for supervision of maintenance work
10. Ability to motivate, train, and delegate responsibility to accomplish results
11. Ability to lead, build consensus, and work within a team environment
12. Demonstrated ability to initiate and manage change
13. Hold team members accountable and manage their job performance at all times
14. Knowledge of food defense and bio-safety requirements
15. Familiarity with SQF as well as ability to administer SQF Code requirements
Education and/or Experience Required at Entry:
1. Bachelors degree in mechanical engineering, or industrial engineering. Technical degree needed.
2. GPA 3.0 (minimum out of 4.0)
3. Detail oriented.
4. Proficient in Microsoft Office.
5. Focused on safety as highest priority.
6. Keen interest to excel as a manager in a performance-driven environment.
7. Candidate must be flexible to shift work and be flexible regarding up to 10% travel.
8. Excellent organizational skills
9. Flexibility to work with many projects at a time and still able to meet deadlines
10. Confidentiality and professional ethics at all times
Working Conditions and Environment/Physical Demands:
1. Must be able to sit, stand, kneel, squat 8 to 10 hours a day
2. Must be able to wear all necessary safety and personal protective equipment
3. Must be willing to work at least 80% of time on manufacturing production floor
4. Standard office and clerical duties where required to record, format, analyze or share information
