Position Summary:

The Assistive Technology Specialist is a compassionate professional dedicated to assessing, implementing, and supporting assistive technology solutions for individuals with disabilities. This role provides technical assistance, training, and professional development to help students with disabilities in Indiana PK-12 public schools achieve their fullest educational potential through accessibility and engagement in the general curriculum.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, the specialist collaborates with educators, therapists, students and other stakeholders to identify and implement the most effective tools to enhance independence, learning, communication, and overall access to free and appropriate public education for individuals with diverse needs. This includes using assistive technology and accessible educational materials to support students, teachers, administrators, service providers, and families in maximizing educational outcomes.

This specialist focuses on curriculum access for Indiana public K-12 schools, particularly for Blind/Low Vision students.

Essential Functions:

  • Knowledge and experience in the areas of assistive technology (AT) and accessible educational materials (AEM).
  • Basic awareness of federal and state rules and regulations governing the provision of services to students with disabilities, including IDEA and Article 7.
  • Exceptional oral, written and interpersonal communication and customer service skills to handle complex and sensitive interactions with stakeholders statewide.
  • Good conflict resolution and effective decision-making skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to provide timely, accurate information and meet all reporting requirements.
  • Ability to set priorities and meet deadlines for several simultaneous job-demands.
  • Strong computer and technology skills including Microsoft Windows, MS applications, Mac OS, iOS, Google, cloud storage and documents and a desire to routinely learn new technology.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently both independently and in team situations.
  • Ability to travel independently

Among other duties, this primarily includes providing technical assistance, training, classroom observations, disseminating information, and connecting educators, service providers, and parents with needed assistive technology.

Education, Licenses, or Certifications:

  • Indiana State Certification/License in education or related service (VI, SLP, OT, PT) strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in special education, social work, rehab technology or related field. Completion of related certification program(s) and/or prior experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
  • Education or experience in the assistive technology and accessibility field preferred.
  • Valid driver license

Experience required:

  • Experience working with individuals with disabilities.
  • 3-5yrs experience in Assistive Technology or related field.
  • Strong computer skills for communication and data tracking and reporting.

Working Hours:

  • Schedule varies, typically 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Minimum of 40 hours per week.
