Reports to: Site Manager & Site Supervisor

Status: Full-Time

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Pay Range: $27.40-$35.62/hr

Position Summary

The SUD Counselor provides counseling and treatment (related to the employee’s scope of practice) to patients struggling with addiction, performs discharge and referral summaries for patients and maintains client case files. We offer all of the SUD counselors’ monthly continuing education credits (CEUs) as well as reimbursement for certification fees.

 

Required Qualifications

 

  • High School diploma required, Associate or Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred OR an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
  • Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor. Valid CCAPP, CADTP or CAADE certification required.
  • If in recovery, a minimum of two years of sobriety is required
  • Experience counseling people with substance abuse challenges using evidence-based practices.
  • Must be able to work collaboratively with others in a multi-disciplinary team environment, respecting and valuing the perspectives and experiences of others.
  • Demonstrated skill with Harm Reduction, Motivational Interviewing, and Client-Centered theory.
  • Able to maintain and understand appropriate roles and boundaries among patients, peers, and WellSpace partners/stakeholders.
  • Ability to write progress notes to standard and maintain detailed statistical records.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, professional relationships.
  • Ability to work holidays, weekends, and alternate shifts as needed to maintain required staffing levels.
  • Excellent customer service experience, including active listening, problem-solving, and the ability to remain calm in emotional or stressful situations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to abide by HIPAA and standards of professional ethics.
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing services for the underserved and sensitive when working with people from low-income populations with diverse educational, lifestyle, ethnic, and cultural origins; disabled, homeless, substance users, persons with HIV (AIDS), and/or physiologically impaired.
  • Intermediate level of computer literacy. Electronic Health Record experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the local treatment community and how to make referrals is preferred.
  • The ability to work independently and as a team.
  • Successful completion of all required organizational and CRISIS program training.
  • Current CPR and first aid certificate or willingness to be trained required within first (90) ninety days of employment.
  • Adherence to infection control procedures, including but not limited to, standard precautions of temperature monitoring, hand washing, symptom self-monitoring, masking and social distancing.
  • Assist and support the Center/Department/Program to meet standards of High Reliability.
  • Valid California driver’s license and insurable driving record that meets the organization's insurance policy standards.

 

Essential Responsibilities

  • Work with patients experiencing a behavioral health crisis who are often unhoused with co-occurring disorders such as mental health, chronic medical conditions, and substance use disorders at a high acuity care facility requiring 24/7 patient support and monitoring.
  • Provide substance use counseling and treatment services.
  • Conduct assessments and screenings for substance use disorders and provide substance use counseling and referrals to treatment services.
  • Assume responsibility for maintaining an accurate record of sobering patient's intake, assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, billing, and discharge. Write progress notes according to County standards.
  • Maintain patient case files in the electronic health record (EHR) and document patient's progress and updates according to established standards and timelines.
  • Meet with each patient individually and provide care coordination and linkage to various community resource programs, benefits, and supports.
  • Provide patients with self-management skills (e.g. relapse prevention) and tools to enhance their participation in their own treatment and recovery. Collect, develop, and distribute health and mental health improvement tools on an on-going basis.
  • Round a minimum of every 2 hours to check on patient status. Document rounds in EHR.
  • Participate in clinical consultation, professional collaboration, and case management meetings.
  • Maintain confidentiality, ethics, and professionalism in all aspects of the job.
  • Act as liaison and refer patients to other medical and community services, both in the agency and outside the treatment community, as needed.
  • Assist with CRBH daily operations such as laundry, food distribution, transportation, cleaning of the site, etc.
  • Attend regular meetings with management and multi-disciplinary team.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

 

The work environment is characteristic of an office environment. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands and arms to reach. The employee is also required to stand; walk; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must also possess hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the phone. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.

 

The employee may be in contact with individuals and families in crisis who may be ill, using substances and/or not attentive to personal health and safety for themselves or their homes. The employee may experience a number of unpleasant sensory demands associated with the client’s use of alcohol and drugs, and the lack of personal care. The employee may also be exposed to bodily fluids (blood, urine) and hazardous chemicals.
