What are MMLA’s Community Clinics?

  • MMLA partners with community-based organizations to offer in-person legal services where our clients live and work.
  • MMLA currently hosts six Community Clinics in Minneapolis: Community Clinics - Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid.
  • Our Clinic Attorneys work at their clinic sites 2 – 3 days per week. The remainder of the time, they work remotely or in our downtown office. This position will not have a particular clinic assignment. Rather, this position supports the entire Clinic Unit in the substantive area of family law.
  • Our Community Clinics strive to be accessible, flexible, and responsive. In relationship with our community partners, we also grow in our cultural literacy.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Apply the principles of MMLA's Racial Justice Values Statement in all interactions.
  • Provide overarching guidance and support to MMLA Minneapolis’s Community Clinic attorneys in the area of family law. This includes divorce, custody, child support, OFPs and HROs, guardianship, ICWA, and CHIPS-adjacent matters.
  • Supervise clinic attorneys’ casework in the above-mentioned areas.
  • Directly supervise staff attorneys, when so assigned.
  • Represent clients in family law proceedings, including negotiations, mediations, and court appearances.
  • Host internal and public-facing family law trainings.
  • Manage a full caseload, ensuring timely and effective prioritization of tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Conduct outreach to form new community partnerships and raise the Clinics’ public profile.
  • Actively cultivate your understanding of our clients’ backgrounds and cultures.
  • Provide coverage at Minneapolis clinic sites, as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the legal team to support the overall goals of MMLA.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: 

  • Knowledge:
    • In-depth understanding of family law, including divorce, custody, child support, OFPs and HROs, guardianship, ICWA, and CHIPS-adjacent matters.
    • Familiarity with local and state family law regulations and procedures.
    • Knowledge of legal research methods and resources.
    • Familiarity with outside social service resources/providers to further assist clients in meeting their needs and bolstering their legal cases
  • Skills:
    • Track record of effective litigation in family law.
    • Strong negotiation and mediation skills.
    • Legal research and writing.
    • Project management, including delegation.
  • Abilities:
    • Handle emotionally charged situations with empathy and professionalism.
    • Lead a small group of people towards a common goal.
    • Strong analytical abilities to evaluate legal issues and develop effective strategies.
    • Strong organizational skills to manage a dynamic caseload in a healthy, sustainable way.
  • Other Characteristics:
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to build strong relationships with clients and colleagues.
    • Commitment to providing high-quality legal services and making a positive impact in the community.
    • Membership in relevant professional organizations and active participation in continuing legal education. 

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS: 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Licensed or eligible for licensure as a Minnesota attorney.
  • 5+ years of family law experience.
  • Some leadership experience as a licensed and working attorney.
  • Work, volunteer, or lived experience with diverse economic, social, rural, and/or cultural communities. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience working in the areas of social justice, economic justice, and/or racial justice.
  • Experience working with victims of violence.
  • Experience working with individuals with mental health concerns.
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations.
  • Fluency in a second language.

COMPENSATION:  

$88,727 to $104,839 per year, depending on experience, plus benefits. Employees are paid for five full days of work but enjoy Friday afternoons off. Benefits include family medical and dental insurance, short- and long-term disability, life insurance, 403(b) with employer match, FSA, employee assistance programs, and generous paid time off. Employees qualify for benefits on the first day of employment.
